RON HOLDEN WITH THE THUNDERBIRDS - My Babe / Love You So - Donna-1315 - 1959

I originally snagged this record for "My Babe" which is an excellent rock-n-roller. For some reason though it's the cheesy teenage ballad on the other side that I'm obsessed with. There must be a million songs like "Love You So" out there. But whereas teenage doo-wop love songs usually sound sterile and clean, "Love You So" has a particular rawness to it. The claves are offbeat a lot of the time. The piano part sounds like something even I could stab at. The lyrics and rhyme are embarrassingly predictable. And the melody is simple and repetitive like a lullaby. There's something very genuine and comforting about all of this.
